Description
The Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal was adopted in 1989 and it came into force in 1992. With 178 Parties (as at 31 December 2011), it has nearly universal membership. The overarching objective of the Convention is to protect human health and the environment against the adverse effects of hazardous wastes. One of the identified priority waste streams is electrical and electronic waste (e-waste), in particular used and end-of-life equipment from the ICT sector.
The Secretariat is located in Geneva, Switzerland.
Within the framework of the Basel Convention, the Secretariat cooperates and collaborates with UNEP on a large range of issues to deliver the Convention’s programme of work. The Secretariat also ensures the coordination with UNEP activities in the view of enhancing legal and institutional consistency, sharing of experiences and approaches, and efficiency in the provision of support to Parties.
